Appearing in her second Atlanta concert in less than a year, Tony Award Winner Idina Menzel must have an idea that Atlanta audiences like her. After a sold-out concert last November at Atlanta Symphony Hall and a crowd of enthusiastic fans waiting to catch her leaving the stage door, she certainly has reason to think so.
Beloved for her stage performances as Maureen in Rent and Elphaba in Wicked, Menzel has become more widely known for her recent guest appearances on the television show Glee. She has released one solo album, 2008’s I Stand. Currently on a summer concert tour, Menzel frequently performs with symphony orchestras. Saturday’s concert at Chastain Park Amphitheatre will be Menzel’s third with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The full symphony complements Menzel’s distinctive voice in a remarkable way, and both she and audiences know it.
If November’s concert is an indicator of what is to come on Saturday, then audiences can expect to be wowed with renditions from popular musicals (such as Funny Girl, Rent, and Wicked). You have not heard “Defying Gravity” until you have heard it performed live by Idina Menzel with a 70-plus member orchestra. Menzel will also probably sing a few selections from her album.
Part of the Delta Classical Series, the concert starts at 8:00 pm on Saturday, July 9 at Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta. The doors open at 7:00 pm and coolers and other carry-in items are allowed. Table seating (if still available) must be purchased in groups of four and six. Individual seats range from $25 to $75 and can be purchased from any Ticketmaster outlet as well as the Ticketmaster website.
