Actor’s Express announces a special presentation of heartwarming new comedy in partnership with Howard & Kaffaty, Inc., Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man. Based on the novel by Fannie Flagg, the play is written and directed by Ed Howard, co-author of the Greater Tunaplays.
The story takes place in the summer of 1958 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Motherless Daisy Fay longs to escape her humble beginnings and deal with her alcoholic, bartending father. She finds her outlet through a local community theater, its benevolent costume designer Mr. Cecil and the lovelorn crop duster Jimmy Snow. The fun escalates when the two send snaggle-toothed, four-eyed Daisy Fay off to the Miss Mississippi beauty pageant in Tupelo.
According to playwright and director Howard, “I fell in love with Daisy Fay, my favorite character in all of literature, and I want everybody to meet her.”
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man is the semi-autobiographical first novel of Fannie Flagg, known for Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and Welcome to the World, Baby Girl, among many other novels. Howard says the story deals with “growing up in the south” and “discovering the healing power of theater.”
The one-woman show stars Veronika Duerr, last seen on the Actor’s Express stage as the title character in last season’s hit comedy Becky Shaw. Duerr received a Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play for her work in Tradin’ Paint at Theatre in the Square.
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man runs in a rotating schedule with the current hit production of Spring Awakening. Performances for Daisy Fay are Sunday to Tuesday at 8:00 and Saturdays at 2:00 through September 17. All tickets are $14.00 plus tax and fees.
