This comedy was nominated for the 2010 Tony Award for best play of the season and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. It’s the simple story of a husband and wife learning to break out of society’s constraints in order to truly love each other. Washington City Paper called it “a sex comedy with a head on its shoulders and a heart on its sleeve.”
Welcome to the 1880s. Chester Arthur is in the White House. Women are corseted, as are men in their own way. It’s the dawn of the age of electricity and a handy new instrument to treat “hysteria” has Dr. Givings’ patients aglow and his young wife very curious. It is a comedy about sex, intimacy and equality. Note: Contains adult themes handled in a tasteful way and brief nudity.
The show runs Thursday through Sunday (and Wednesdays, October 19 and 26) through October 30 at 7 Stages Backstage Theatre, 1105 Euclid Ave. N.E., Atlanta, GA 30307. For more information, please visit Synchronicity Theatre’s website.
