Alliance Premieres Broke on Hertz Stage, Institutes Sunday Night “Pay What You Can” Policy

Broke at Atlanta's Alliance TheatreAtlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre will kick off its 2011-2012 Hertz Stage series on September 23, 2011 with Broke, written by Atlanta’s own Janece Shaffer.

Janece Shaffer is a nationally produced, award-winning playwright. Her works (Managing Maxine, Bluish, He Looks Good in a Hat) have been produced in Atlanta, St. Louis, Sarasota, Toronto and Phoenix. As a listener and chronicler of Atlanta life, Shaffer has created a piece that goes outside of the domestic realm and represents the effects of economic unrest on corporate culture.

Boke is a deeply moving and almost-too-close-for-comfort story about when the indispensable in corporate America become dispensable. Shaffer once again brings to life a story that touches our community’s heart with compassion, keen insights, wit and humor.

The Eliason family is living the American dream until Liz Eliason, a high level marketing executive, comes home to her husband Jonathan with the news that she’s been fired. She is shocked; Jonathan is thrilled. With the wealth they have accrued from her career, they can now finally enjoy a life together. But when the company Liz has worked for goes under a few days later and with it, a great part of their wealth, Liz, Jonathan and their 19 year-old daughter Missie – a student at NYU – are now facing a new reality. The play asks the question: when it seems like everything is falling through your fingers, what (and who) do you hold onto?

In the spirit of Broke, the Alliance has instituted a “Pay What You Can” policy for every Sunday Evening performance of BROKE – 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, and 10/23. Patrons can pay what they can at the Box Office. Details below.
