Synchronicity Theatre will now open its 14th season on October 28 with In the Next Room or the vibrator play, Sarah Ruhl’s comic love letter to marriage. The show will run through November 19 at Horizon Theatre. Partnering with Horizon gives the theater more seats (200 vs. 70) and free parking for patrons.
It’s the 1880s. Women are corseted, as are men in their own way. The age of electricity has brought about an innovative medical instrument to treat “hysteria.” It has Dr. Givings’ patients all aglow, and his young wife very curious. A Tony Award nominee and a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist, this comic love letter to marriage is fun and frisky but just mildly risqué. It’s a period piece, after all. And to the good doctor, the vibrator, is no more unusual than a stethoscope. (Contains adult content and brief nudity.)
The cast includes Brian Kurlander as Dr. Givings; Kate Donadio as Mrs. Catherine Givings (pictured); Tony Larkin as Leo Irving, an artist; Tiffany Morgan as Mrs. Daldry; Doyle Reynolds as Mr. Daldry; Daryl Fazio as Annie, Dr. Givings’ midwife assistant; and Xiomara Yanique as Elizabeth, a wet nurse. Rachel May, Synchronicity’s Producing Artistic Director, directs.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 3 and 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 7 p.m. on Sundays. For tickets and more information please visit www.synchrotheatre.com, or call 404-484-8636.
