Last seen on the Fox Theatre stage as Susan Waverly in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, 12-year-old Mary Peeples returns in January, starring in the title role of Theater of the Stars’ production of Annie. The the beloved musical’s limited run at the Fox Theatre will be from January 14 to 22, 2012. Read below as Mary describes her favorite things about Annie and what she is looking forward to most about this production.
When did you first see Annie?
The first time I saw Annie was when the stage version came to our town of Valdosta. It was playing at Mathis Auditorium and my grandpa decided to take me and my sister. I was about six years old when I first saw it.
What is your favorite song from Annie?
My favorite song from Annie is “Maybe.” This is my favorite because it is when the audience really gets a good idea of Annie’s character and why she is determined to find her parents.
Besides the role of Annie, who is your favorite character from the show?
My favorite character is Ms. Hannigan because she has very bad luck and is desperate to get out of the orphanage. This makes her a very comical character.
What are you most looking forward to with the experience of starring in this production?
Well, this is the biggest role I have ever had and the opportunity of meeting new people and growing as an actor makes me thrilled to be Annie!
What was your audition process like to be cast as Annie?
The audition process was two days long. The first day, there were about 100 girls and we had to sing “Hard Knock Life” in groups, each of us getting to sing a couple of verses. Then we had to dance to “You’re Never Fully Dressed.” The casting directors asked five of us to come back the next day to read, sing and dance some more so they could decide who would be the main orphans.
They called me the next Friday and told me I had gotten the part of Annie!
What has been your favorite experience at the Fox Theatre?
Last year, I got the chance to perform at the Fox for the first time in Theater of the Stars’ production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. The view of the audience was just breathtaking and it gives me goose bumps to know that I get to perform there again.
What is the plan to balance your school work with rehearsals and performances in January?
I am going to have to fit in a few hours of school a day on top of several hours of rehearsal. My school is sending work with me to complete and send back while I am in rehearsal and performing.
How do you enjoy spending your time when not at school or performing?
I like horseback riding, dance, guitar and hanging out with my friends.
What is your favorite subject in school?
Math because I really like my teacher and how he makes it fun!
Why should people come see Annie in January?
It has awesome songs and an amazing story!!! You get to see a great group of orphans and wonderful adult actors!!
