Charmed, I’m Sure!: A Hip Comedic Play in Atlanta’s Fringe Festival

Atlanta Fringe FestivalOn May 10th at 11 p.m., lights will go up on Onyi Okoli’s comedic one-woman play Charmed, I’m Sure! in Atlanta’s Inaugural Fringe Festival. Onyi Okoli, a Baltimore, Maryland native, will be premiering her comedic play to Atlanta’s theater goers Thursday May 10th at 11 p.m., Friday May 11th at 8 p.m., Saturday May 12th at 2 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and Sunday May 13th at 6:30 p.m. at the WonderRoot.

Onyi drew inspiration to write and perform theater from Danny Hoch, the founder of the Hip Hop Theatre Festival in New York. When she first entered college at the University of Southern California (USC), she studied philosophy and communication. She switched her major to theater after her sophomore year due to the encouragement of colleagues and theater professors. Since then, she has written and performed numerous shows in and outside of USC. Eric Trules, a USC theater professor who specializes in solo performance, helped guide and develop Charmed, I’m Sure! After Eric Trules helped, Onyi has performed her one-woman play in the cities of North Hollywood, Baltimore, and New York. Her performances has received rave reviews being called “a gift that everyone in the audience truly treasured” by Broadway World.

She is looking forward to producing the same performance in Atlanta’s Fringe Festival, whose mission is to promote the next generation of arts enthusiasts. “I am ecstatic to bring Charmed, I’m Sure! to Atlanta,” Onyi admits. “From Alice Walker to Tyler Perry, Atlanta has a rich entertainment history and now that I am performing my show in Atlanta’s Inaugural Fringe Festival, I feel I will be a part of Atlanta’s rich history, too!” Onyi hopes that her show will continue to inspire young adults and inner city youths to grow to love theater as she loves it.

A Mother’s Day Treat: Charmed, I’m Sure! is a collection of comedic monologues written and performed by Onyi Okoli. One of these monologues is dedicated to every mother whose been accused of being overprotective. Daughters and sons, tell your mother that you care by bringing her to the show on Mother’s Day, May 13th at 6:30 p.m.

In Charmed, I’m Sure!, Onyi reveals all about her life growing up in Baltimore City also known as “Charm City.” From attempting to get her first boyfriend to nearly being evicted from her apartment, she has a story that everyone can relate to. Follow her outrageous schemes and consequences as she grows from living in Baltimore and attending college in Los Angeles. It’s a Laugh out Loud Comedy that will leave you…Charmed, I’m Sure!

About the Writer & Performer: Onyi Okoli (pronounced Own-Yee Oh-Kool-Lee) graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre and a minor in Communication and the Entertainment Industry. While at the University of Southern California, she has directed and starred in George C. Wolfe’s The Colored Museum, 2005 and 2006 Sketch Comedy Shows, and a self-penned play, The Light in the Darkness. Okoli also directed August Wilson’s Fences in honor of his legacy. Onyi performed her one-woman show, Charmed, I’m Sure! in North Hollywood, Baltimore, and New York. The show has received rave reviews and media coverage from Broadway World, The Baltimore Times, and Baltimore’s City Paper.

About the Professor: Eric Trules is an Associate Professor of Practice at USC’s School of Theater, where he has been a faculty member since 1986. His specialty is solo performance and he has twice brought his own one-man shows to the Edinburgh Festival where his first show was “short-listed” for the best show of the Fringe. He is also an Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award winner and has been a professional modern dancer, filmmaker, screenwriter, director, producer, and clown.
