Two world premiere musicals, Aurora Theatre’s Clyde ‘n Bonnie: A Folktale and Alliance Theatre’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, lead the 2012 Atlanta Theater Fan Award Nominations with 10 nominations each. In addition to Clyde ‘n Bonnie: A Folktale and Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Actor’s Express’ production of Spring Awakening and Fabrefaction Theatre Company’s production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street comprise the Best Musical category.
Leading with the most nominations for a play, Georgia Shakespeare’s production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, received six nominations. Joining The Glass Menagerie in the Best Play category are Freud’s Last Session (Theatrical Outfit), God of Carnage (Alliance Theatre) and The Motherf**ker with the Hat (Actor’s Express).
Kylie Brown becomes the first individual to receive two performance nominations in the same year. Brown is nominated in the Best Leading Actress in a Musical category for her performance as Wendla Bergmann in Spring Awakening at Actor’s Express and in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category for her performance as Anna Wicklow in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County at the Alliance Theatre.
The 2012 nominations also brought two more firsts for the Atlanta Theater Fan Awards. Actor’s Express Artistic Director Freddie Ashley is nominated in both directing categories for helming Spring Awakening and The Motherf**ker with the Hat. Additionally, Sound Designer Clay Benning will be competing against himself with two nominations in the Best Sound Design Category for his work on Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and Into the Woods, both at the Alliance Theatre.
Jessica Phelps West, winner of two Atlanta Theater Fan Awards in 2011, is nominated again for Best Direction of a Play for Freud’s Last Session at Theatrical Outfit. Three other Atlanta Theater Fan Award Winners reaped nominations: Ingrid Cole for Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Gypsy at Atlanta Lyric Theatre), Laura Floyd for Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Clyde ‘n Bonnie: A Folktale at Aurora Theatre) and Richard Garner for Best Direction of a Play (The Glass Menagerie at Georgia Shakespeare).
