Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On
The Fox Theatre plays host to a quartet of legends this week. Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley light up the stage in the hit Broadway show Million Dollar Quartet.
Based on the actual events of December 4, 1956, Million Dollar Quartet fleshes out the historical evening when four of rock-and-roll and country music’s biggest stars get together at Sun Records (the studio where their careers had all been launched) in Memphis, Tennessee for an impromptu jam session.
Sun Records owner Sam Phillips—played fantastically by actor Vince Nappo—narrates and steers the story, which revolves around performances by all the artists, both individually and together. With original concept by Floyd Mutrux, book by Colin Escott and Floy Mutrix, and directed by Eric Schaeffer, this musical delivers an evening of entertainment worth your time.
Million Dollar Quartet is a high energy show, lasting approximately and hour and forty minutes without intermission, with an encore at the end that had the audience members on their feet, clapping and singing along. The ensemble was nothing short of amazing, with talented performances by James Barry as Carl Perkins, David Elkins as Johnny Cash, Ben Goddard as Jerry Lee Lewis, Cody Slaughter as Elvis Presley, and Kelly Lamont as Dyanne (with fabulous musicians Billy Shaffer and Corey Kaiser rounding out the cast).
To sum up Million Dollar Quartet in one word is easy: Delightful. The storyline is interesting, the music is lively, and the talent of the cast is absolutely crowd pleasing. Whether you’re a fan of music from this era or not, Million Dollar Quartet is sure to leave you smiling and tapping your feet.
The Tony Award winning Million Dollar Quartet, presented as part of Fifth Third Bank’s Broadway Atlanta series, runs at the Fabulous Fox Theatre March 12-17. Tickets are available online at www.FoxAtlTix.com or by calling 1-855-285-8499.
