Theater of the Stars has cancelled the July 9 through July 14, 2013 engagement of Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story at the Fox Theatre. All single tickets will be refunded per the instructions below.
After social media speculation about financial trouble on Wed., June 26, 2013, Theater of the Stars posted a letter on the theater’s website in the late afternoon appealing for donations, stating the sixty-year-old theater needs a million dollars by August 30, 2013 in order to survive.
The letter from Producer Christopher B. Manos states:
“I must now come to you to ask for your help to save Theater of the Stars. Our challenge is an urgent one. With the bumpy economy and several funding sources dried up, we have come to a critical juncture. I’m going to give it to you straight. We must raise $500,000 by July 12th 2013 or Theater of the Stars will cease operations and shut its doors.”
“This first amount of money will help us to produce and present Dreamgirls and Anything Goes as well as addressing operating expenses of Theater of the Stars, including advances with respect to the balance of the season. We will also need to raise an additional $500,000 by August 30th 2013, in order to continue our season and present Disney’s The Little Mermaid, STOMP and Cats and to have a more secure footing as we move into our 2014 season. To assure that we take on no additional debt, regretfully, we must cancel The Buddy Holly Story.”
Those who would like to help Theater of the Stars reach their fundraising goal have several options, including mailing a check or donating online. To donate online (through PayPal) click here. To read the full letter, please visit the theater’s website.
In a FAQ on the theater’s website Manos explains that the company made efforts to avoid a large fundraiser and that the financial situation had been a growing situation. The recent loss of a loan exacerbated the situation. The FAQ states:
“Unfortunately, our plan included a loan that would be paid back during our 2013 Season and the loan fell through this week. The loss of that loan was significant and we realized that we were in a storm of financial stress that we could no longer absorb. We viewed a “Save Theater of the Stars” campaign as a last resort and made every effort to avoid that.”
