The 2013 Essential Theatre Play Festival will present three new plays by Georgia Playwrights July 12 to August 11, 2013 at Actor’s Express.

MYSTERIOUS CONNECTIONS by Peter Hardy
Isobel and Pamela are two lonely women that are instantly drawn to one another from the first time they meet — they soon become so close that Isobel is able to enter into Pamela’s dreams, which leads the two of them into a journey through their own haunted pasts.  The World Premiere of a fantasy-drama about love, nightmares and moving from darkness into light, this play was one of a few chosen (from a thousand submissions ) for development at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s National Playwrights’ Conference.  (Advisory: Sexual situations and disturbing imagery.)

“As connections are made, boundaries are crossed. I’ve always been fascinated with crossing boundaries.  As a child, I tried to catch the precise moment of falling asleep. I wanted to watch when and how I crossed over. In this play, we get to watch that crossing, witness that mysterious connection. And more. Mysterious connections between people. You know what I mean. The phone rings and you know who it is — without looking at caller ID. A friend calls and says “I had dream about you, what’s going on?” — and something is. You meet a stranger and feel a sense of recognition, like the smell of a memory.  And then there are the interior connections — between past experiences and present beliefs, connections that trap or trip or teach or transform. This play is a kind of modern myth, the Hero’s Journey set in 1991. The journey is to healing. The path is forgiveness. And the play, since Peter Hardy wrote it, is funny. And (since Peter Hardy wrote it) kinda creepy sometimes. It is both light and dark, making mysterious connections as it crosses back and forth over boundaries of waking and dreaming, of damage and healing, of fear and love.”

CAST:  Nancy Lowery Powell, Daryl Lisa Fazio, Celia Gunn-Zaboli and Ben Silver
STRAY DOGS by Matthew Myers

A comedy-romance about cops and criminals — sort of like Quentin Tarentino except a whole lot sweeter.  This is the World Premiere of the play that won the 2013 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award.  (Advisory: Rough language and onstage violence.)
“I was drawn to this play for a number of reasons – it’s funny and boldly theatrical, full of surprising twists and turns and unexpected complications, with occasionally shocking violence.  But I think that what I liked most about it was that, at its heart, it tells a touching and multi-layered love story about two South Boston misfits.   Jackson and Violet are a couple of stray dogs who’ve been yearning for something more from life, and when they find each other, everything changes for them … but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to turn out happy.  Bottom line, everybody needs love … and sometimes love is wicked weird.”

CAST:  Lake Roberts, Amanda Lindsey, Marc Gowan, Larry, Jr., Aaron Gotlieb and Ashleigh Hoppe
SWIMMING WITH JELLYFISH by Katie Grant Shalin
The Professional World Premiere of a play that takes a moving and funny look at that classic American institution, the family – a mother and father trying to heal themselves and move past old wounds and disappointments, while their two almost-grown children are facing the prospect of moving out on their own.  If you grew up with a mother or father, or a sister or brother, you’re going to see yourself somewhere in this play.

“I’m looking forward to exploring with these actors the most established of conventions – family. The fragility of it, and its strength. Trust, forgiveness, straying, returning, accepting and pushing. Katie Grant Shalin has given us a family experiencing all of these things and trying to answer the difficult question – is love enough?”
–         Director Bill Murphey
CAST:  Ann Wilson, James Baskin, Audra Pagano, Matthew Busch
