A simple white canvas. A 200,000 francs price tag. The real cost? Decades-long friendships. Enter the world of Art, by Yasmina Reza, author of Broadway’s hit play God of Carnage, at Out of Box Theatre.

The story revolves around three friends, played by John Stanier, Dave Lauby and Aaron Strand, who find their previously solid friendship on shaky ground when Serge invests in an expensive, abstract painting, raising questions about the nature of art and friendship. The purchase reveals unsettling secret opinions and conflicting world-views. As their arguments shift from the theoretical to the personal, this Tony Award®-winning comedy examines the pressures friends place on each other – and how different values can transform relationships. The spotlight will be on these actor’s back-and-forth in Out of Box’s small, intimate theatre in the Artisan Resource Center in Marietta.

Out of Box Artistic Director Carolyn Choe directs this production of Art.The play, Choe says, will strike a chord with locals who appreciate art. “We are surrounded by artists of all types in the Artisan Resource Center, and choosing to produce the play Art just seemed a natural for us. Serge and Yvan make compelling cases for and against some types of modern art … It comes from a personal place for each of the characters, so it’s tinged with conflict,” she said. “For me, art can land in so many different ways. Sometimes it’s obvious, that it captures a moment or a gesture. Sometimes it asks a question. Sometimes it challenges me to think. Sometimes it just indefinable.”

Art runs March 13-28, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. Tickets are $17-22 in advance, $20-25 at the door. For more information and tickets visit or call 678.653.4605. Tickets are also on sale for April’s production of Always…Patsy Cline.
