Did He or Didn’t He? Audiences Must Decide
It surrounds all of us every day: gossip, rumors, lies, assumptions, jealousy and power. Yet doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty – as evidenced in Out of Box Theatre’s production of Doubt, A Parable, onstage August 22 – September 6, 2014.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® for best play, John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, A Parable examines the blurry line between reality and gossip, discipline and compassion, truth and doubt. This powerhouse drama is an eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences; a gripping mystery that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
Set in 1964 against the backdrop of an America in the midst of change, a progressive young Priest’s conduct comes under question by Sister Aloysius, a veteran nun twice his age. As questions begin to plague her, Sister Aloysius finds herself consumed by doubt in an ancient institution that once provided the comforts of community, certainty, and faith. But with no proof, can there be certainty? Will judgment triumph over ambiguity?
“This drama is brilliantly written, and our cast is the most talented and established in our region,” said Carolyn Choe, the director and Out of Box’s Artistic Director. “We are delighted to be presenting such a richly textured dramatic work for our audiences here in the intimacy of Out of Box. And to really bring the audience into the story, the play is presented in the round.”
The cast features muliti-award-winning playwright and actor, Topher Payne as Father Flynn. Joining him onstage is Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Award-winning actress Jo Howarth as Sister Aloysius and professional actress Amanda Cucher as Sister James. Rounding out the cast is the mulit-talented Parris Sarter as the child’s mother, Mrs. Muller.
Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for drama, and a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt, A Parable is widely regarded as one of the most important and accomplished new plays of the 21st Century.
