LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION—an exhibit of renowned plein air painters, August 23-September 28
ART Station Contemporary art center in Stone Mountain hosts an exhibit, opening on Saturday, August 23, and a Paint Out on Saturday, September 13, that celebrate the artistic tradition of plein air painting. Historically, many of the world’s greatest landscape artists painted primarily on location, or “en plein air.” This approach allowed them to capture exquisite color and light, and reproduce the particular, fleeting atmosphere of a place, in a moment of time. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of artists painting en plein air, in all media: oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor. Working on location presents the artists with many challenges they wouldn’t have in a studio setting. The results are worth the extra effort, though. Plein air paintings have a quality of authenticity that can’t be achieved any other way.
The exhibit, “Location, Location, Location,” brings together renowned plein air painters from around the Southeast. Although the artists work in different mediums and have individual styles and approaches, each painting has the power to transport you to the exact time and place when the artist was creating it. There will be an opening reception at ART Station on Saturday, August 23, from 5:00-7:00 PM. The other Stone Mountain Galleries on Main Street will also be welcoming visitors. The event is open to the public, and is free of charge. The exhibit continues through September 28.
