Aurora Theatre continues the 2012-2013 Harvel Lab Series with a Teatro del Sol production, Burundanga by Spanish playwright Jordi Galcerán. Poor, pregnant, Barcelonan Berta wants to know if her boyfriend Manel really loves her, but the truth can be dangerous. At the urging of her roommate Sílvia, she gives him Burundanga, a powerful truth serum. The results are a wacky firestorm of events that include steamy secrets, unfulfilled culinary dreams and a terrorist plot to kidnap a powerful businessman. This play will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
About Teatro del Sol
Founded by Aurora Theatre Producing Artistic Director, Anthony P. Rodriguez, Teatro del Sol is a Spanish language theatre initiative whose goal is the preservation of Hispanic cultural heritage. The US Census bureau ranks Georgia second in the nation with a 60% growth in Hispanic population since 2000. Teatro del Sol produces professional programming to best serve this rapidly growing community. According to the latest census in Gwinnett County, Hispanics now make up almost 20% of the local population. Mr. Rodriguez, a first generation American of Cuban decent, saw the need to serve this large demographic as a fundamental passion.
Producer Quote
“Teatro del Sol has become much more important than just producing Spanish plays,” explains Aurora Theatre Artistic Director Anthony P. Rodriguez. “These shows bring our community together and humanize our culture in a way that news reports simply do not. Latinos are a loud, funny, passionate people and the plays we are choosing convey that soul and humor. Plus for many of our older patrons, it provides a taste of home.”
